My training is in plant developmental genetics and I am particularly interested in the genetics underlying species-level variation in plant form and the evolution of genomes. Our lab uses the large tropical genus Begonia to study evolutionary patterns. We are using the extensive collections of herbariums and museums to gain a better understanding of diversity and are developing methods of sequencing and analysing genetic data from herbarium specimens.

We are currently exploring how the genetic data produced from molecular methods of plant identification can be mined to provide information on the current population biology, the demographic history, the effect of selection and drift and the genome structure of the species.
